Ok, went out side the other morning, late for me that day, about 9am...I found my Buff roo, one of my Biggest one, pulled out.....head,neck up to shoulder out of the run, and the rest of the body stuck inside the run. I think he was too fat to pull through. Whatever did this must have gone into the run, and attacked my flock. I found some feathers inside the run, and just as you step inside the run, I could see pieces of meat and blood all along the inside of the run wall...*chainlink and tarped*....found feathers at the door handle area which is about up to my hips alittle higher maybe, but my roo at the very bottom 1/2 out.

I dont know what got into my run, ANY IDEAS ANYONE? I KNOW THERES AN ARTICLE ON BYC....but I still am lost as to what did this!!! the neck was completely cleaned off feathers and meat...neck to the face. My poor babies, the fear they must have felt!!!!!

once I got him I put him in a bucket to get a better look....

so can anyone tell me what Im looking at as far as predators?

thanks all, Im very upset that this happened and trying to protect the rest. I dont know how anything could have gotten in!!!!! I had a 2" gap in my run door, and I saw this and for the time being since its cold and raining, I put a board in place to close the gap and anchored it secured tight to the frame of the kennel run, whatever it was ripped it out.

This is the run, and door he was pulled through

I am so sorry this has happened!

He was a beautiful bird.

That looks like a coon. They will reach in a grab birds and then try to do that.

So sorry.

The tarp is not really a barrier to a coon. They are enormously strong and can simply force their way between tarp and chain link because the tarp will stretch and the coon will compress.

Sorry that happened. He was a beautiful bird. Looks like a coon to me. You probably won't know though unless you get a game cam and see what's snooping around. I had chicks in my brooder a few years ago with a dipped welded wire bottom. I had a coon pull their legs off through the bottom of the brooder. Lost 15 chicks. They are brutal and have excellent dexterity. I put nothing past them.... Haven't had any predator problems since I adopted my outside dogs (Golden Retriever X and Black Lab X). I would also suggest putting a hot wire around your coop. That deters them quickly...
Sorry again for the loss of your roo.

I'm so sorry to hear that...it's so frustrating to lose one even after putting all that effort in.

Where in the picture was the roo pulled through? Sheesh...I don't see much room to pull it through...makes me sick though.

It probably was a dadgum coon...those things are creative and nasty.

I definitely agree with the coon vote. They are vicious!! And he will be back.

I bet if you set a trap with your boys innards (sorry) you'll get it for sure.

Sure sounds like a coon, smart pred even attempted to open the door. I would hot wire around the bottom and top to the run. To keep what ever it is out also set up a live trap I would make sure its lg enough for a coon. The game cam idea is great it is surprising what goes bump in the dark in our own back yard (but I digress). So sorry for your loss hope you catch the pred.
