GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

Greetings,

I've been busy with school, and I haven't had much time to check the thread. I will be placing an order for Chinese capon tools at the end of this month, so send me a PM if you would like to order tools. I can PM information about ordering at that time.

Yay!!! B/c the dp meatie chickens are getting more names by the day by my bf! Tonight we expect freezing temps, trying to rig up a heat lamp for the meaties now

You don't have to do that this early. They will adjust to colder temps. Maybe put a shower curtain around the coop or tractor as it gets colder. You don't need heat lamp for 7 wk olders. They will be fine. You do have a tractor don't you. One BYC'er put their tractor on top of several hay bales. Just around the outside and had the inside hollowed out and secure for winter. Curtains around the outside.

They have an enclosed run with a roof and a coop in the run while we expand their run bigger to have someplace to put my ayam cemani & haffies which are getting too big for the brooder box at 3 weeks old. With this cold snap I'm not sure when my new chicks can go outside, they're cozy in my master bathroom for now. And a slw in my kitchen chicken er, it suddenly couldn't walk today so far I gave it a dropper full of nutridrench and have her quiet with 18% protein all flock pellets soaked and nutridrench and vitamin/electrolytes water in with her that she's drinking/eating. They just went through a week of corid water in their hanging nipple waterer. So what else to do? 25 6-7 week old chicks in a relatively small coop huddled together should keep warm enough, but I worry b/c it got so cold so fast!

I'm sorry, I didn't realize they were so young. Maybe someone else can chime in on whether Double Kindness can keep her young3 week old dp birds outside this winter. Maybe not. Check out the CO thread and see what they do with the young ones in your area.

No I was wondering when I should/could move the 3 week old outside in 2 weeks? 5 weeks? It's getting very cold here in CO. I just moved them into a huge brooder box in my barn, but am expecting 18 more day old chicks in less than 2 weeks. I can keep them in my inside brooder boxes, but we built the big one yesterday in anticipation of adding 18 chicks soon, and moving these 3 week old chicks outside when it's time to bring the new chicks to the barn?

Yesterday got warm and sunny, this morning has a definite chill/bite in the am, in a month there will probably be frost on the ground. Those are the weather conditions. I worry about these 3 week old chicks b/c they are not cold hardy breeds (ayam cemani), but their parents are local and their parents from upstate ny, so they could be aclimated? 12 of my new chicks are super cold hardy white bresse. I just am not sure about the cemani which is why I got a dozen of each, to keep each other warm? I will only be keeping 1 roo of the cemani and bresse, the others, freezer camp.

The best bet, especially in cold weather, is to wait until they are fully feathered (aprox 12 weeks). You can lower temps in the brooder a bit and get them to feather out a little faster.
