GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

Pics
Hey BCMaraniac! How soon does this boy check out? He looks great! My Australorp goes soon...

So I take it the lack of 'nads suppresses the expression of copper? That is interesting... do you have pics of uncut boys from the same hatch?
MD, Has your Australorp made it to the dinner table yet? I couldn't remember if he was supposed to be Thanksgiving or Christmas.

You asked about the lack of testosterone contributing to the lack of copper, and I told you they are mutts. Well, I have another one has begun showing the increase in comb color like a slip, though he hasn't crowed and isn't aggressive. What has happened is that as his comb reddened, he developed more copper(well, mahogany, actually) around his hackles and on the saddle. His combs and wattles aren't really bright red, so I have waited to process. He isn't as large as my biggest capon(which is 9 pounds now), but probably in the neighborhood of 8 pounds, though it is possible he is 3 weeks younger than the other one.

When I have some pure Copper Marans, I am interested in seeing any effect of caponizing on the coloring.

Not yet! We killed hogs the weekend before Thanksgiving, and between all the fresh pork bbq and then the turkey, we were so stuffed all we could do was lay there like slugs... it was our only defense. lol

Soon!... It's almost a shame - he's an awesome purty yard ornament!

You will have to let us know how big he is and how he tastes.

I know what you mean about the yard ornament. The ones we have are gorgeous with those long glossy bluish green black feathers.

Squee! Yes, please do!
I hope your search for local FW breeders is turning out to be equally as fruitful.

I will be going to look at the Splash Marans roosters on Friday.....and guess what?? She is thinking about selling all of her Marans, and is going to price them to me when I get there Friday. Almost all of hers are blue.....plus she has 2 splash hens as well!! I am so excited!!

Kassaundra, PocoPollo is checking into getting me a caponizing set like yours. For some reason, Mr. Tao is not allowed to ship into US anymore. (Mr. Tao is China's version of Amazon. ha) I told her that I'll be happy to wait because I'm putting off my chickens until the end of January. I'll be totally ready by then. You know I'm learning a lot about myself nowadays. Before I'd just think who can I hire to build me a coop. Yesterday I bought a electric screwdriver so I can make one myself.

I'll still need some help but a hoop coop like Bee's is doable for me. I'm stretching my boundaries. Can't wait.

Awesome that is what it is all about, putting our big girl panties (or big boy undies) on and figuring out we CAN do it!!!!! Whether it is building a coop, or processing our own meat, or growing our own food or caponizing our own chicks to grow our own meat w/o having to rely on a grocery store or a hatchery.

Thanks, Sweetie, that means a lot.

Speaking of big girl panties, I have to suck it up and cull two 7 week old chicks who have broken or strained legs. I can kill an older bird for food. But I have a really hard time culling injured (as opposed to sick) chicks. I don't want one-legged predator-attracting chicken pets hanging around, and their legs have not responded to treatment. These chicks are the perfect size for practicing caponizing technique and I have the tools. Just have to muster the detachment to cull them first. No way am I going to practice on a live bird. So I'll let y'all know how the practice went, once I steel myself and actually attempt it.

Thanks for all the info on this thread. It has been enormously useful.
