Speaking of big girl panties, I have to suck it up and cull two 7 week old chicks who have broken or strained legs. I can kill an older bird for food. But I have a really hard time culling injured (as opposed to sick) chicks. I don't want one-legged predator-attracting chicken pets hanging around, and their legs have not responded to treatment. These chicks are the perfect size for practicing caponizing technique and I have the tools. Just have to muster the detachment to cull them first. No way am I going to practice on a live bird. So I'll let y'all know how the practice went, once I steel myself and actually attempt it.

Sorry about your injured chicks, but at least their death will serve a useful purpose.

MC, I am so sorry to hear about your chicks. That is always tough.

You are right, this is an opportunity to make the best out of a bad situation, but there is one thing to keep in mind. If you are planning to cull by bleed out, when you go in to practice the caponizing, there will be no blood in the vessels that are in close proximity to the testicles, so you won't actually know exactly how close you are to the vena cava. If there is a way to cull without bleeding, there will still be blood inside the vessels so you will get an ideal about where the vessels are located with respect to the testicles. Just something to think about.....
