Here are the tools that come w/ the kit


One handed locking retractors

locks and spreads w/ just one hand to just the right width


Some of the other tools, most of them have a small hole in one end for threading so you can loop the teste and remove w/ a thread less likely to damage vessels that way.

See the small hole at the flat end of the pointy probe.

And the flat pincher type tool

also using a combo of the spoon and paddle (spoon under paddle over)

What wire do you use? My set came with a small spool of sewing thread but thread is virtually useless. Once it gets inside the body cavity the thread sticks to everything it touches. The concept is right but not with string.

I understand your frustration, but the thread that came with your set is the capon wire. It is the perfect wire/thread for the job. Thread your probe. Hold the thread in your left hand and the probe in your right hand. Holding the thread even with the back of the testicle, insert the probe into the incision behind the testicle, below it, and forward. Keep going back around the testicle until the thread in your left hand has been crossed over by the thread at the end of the probe. You want to go all the way around and past your left-hand thread to encircle the testicle. Left hand pulls the thread forward, and right hand pulls the threaded end of the probe towards the tail. This sawing motion will cut through the membrane, releasing the testicle. Fishing line is too smooth. Jewelry wire is too rigid. You don't want a rigid loop. You want a flexible saw. Practice is the only way to master the capon wire tool. Keep practicing : )

Next set This is a sequence shot of removing the teste w/ the thread tool, I have another sequence set coming up next.


This is what you will see before the "film" layer is broken and cut or moved out of the way. See the tool w the hole in the top, left of the pic, that is the thread tool.



This is what you see when it is removed. See the pale thing in the center of the hole, that is the crown jewel you are looking for.



This tool has the tread attatched and she is working the tool around the loose end of the testes while keeping the thread held in place. She is attempting to encircle the teste w/ the thread.



Here you can see she has hold of the thread in the same position she inserted the tool, and now has worked the tool around to where you see it, dragging the thread under the teste to get both sides of thread (tool side and thumb side) to the point where the teste is joined to the body


Here they meet up and form a closed loop around the connecting point



No longer connected it just popped right out.


See just to show no tricks we didn't just put someone else's teste on this bird (

) no teste left in the hole.

Merry Christmas Eve

I've had several requests for Chinese capon tools sets, so I will be ordering again on January 15th. If you would like to order tools or a disinfecting box, please send me a PM. The double set has two sizes: Rooster size and chick size.
This single set has a round blade and works for chicks and older birds.
The boxes are aluminum and are approximately 7 1/2" X 3 1/2" X 2"

Thanks for the follow up Poco Pollo and Kass. Good to know the thread that came with the tools will work. You are right that practice, practice, practice is the only way to become proficient. We also need to remind ourselves to stay calm -- especially us beginners. I found I became more anxious the longer the bird was being worked on. Will have to revisit the string-and-probe technique on our next time out.

Update on the two patients from this past Saturday: Both are healthy and vigorous. Both birds ended up with the "puff" under the skin that I had to pop. The orange bird has it again in the thigh area on each side. I will have to repeat the "pop" process again this morning. The wounds have healed up great and I will probably remove the stitches either today or tomorrow.

Wanted to share a few recent links from Spain. The links are in Spanish, but they show a serious commercial market for capons in Spain, especially during the Christmas season.

If anyone wants translation of anything in the links, I can translate.

Not sure what tools are used in Spain, but I believe they sometimes use an instrument called a polipotome the ordinary use of which is to remove polyps from the (human) intestine. This announcement for an instruction course shows some of the instruments they use in Spain.

It isn't so much a different gauge of thread as a different "feel" it is more like the poly thread it doesn't the feel of cotton thread.

I must say that this was a very interesting post. Couldn't understand a word.

But very interesting. Loved the 32 page pdf . Lots of info on going big time on this. I don't think I'm up to it. But I'd love the opportunity. Any chance of getting any info on poullards? Still not up to snuff on how to do it. There is definitely a market for these two. Did you see the prices. 90 euros... Good work..
