Chicabee is right on the money: there is no faster way than chickens to reduce a nice patch of grass to a lunar surface.

Maybe slope some hardware cloth from a couple of feet up on the chicken fencing away to the ground to make a kind of lean-to daytime run for the chickens to eat it all up and add fertilizer.
