grass fed birds question

So, in my opinion, you can raise chickens without any commercial feed providing they have enough space to forage for their food. I have often wandered about the way so many people regard their chickens as being "organic", and yet they feed them commercial food, they treat them for worms, and they give them vaccines. In my book, those chickens are a million miles away from being "organic", and to put in bluntly, they are hardly any different to the chickens one buys in the stores. Are my birds organic? No, not yet, but they will be soon enough. Give me another month to a month and a half, and I'll be there

Hear, hear! I agree! I wish I had better foraging areas for my birds. If I lived closer to the wooded areas this may be a possibility for my free ranged gals but not right now. Still have to give some feed, dang it!

I was just discussing this with my mother the other day...I remember when people didn't buy cat food either. Cats were given kitten chow while very small and then were expected to hunt for their food. I don't recall any thin cats back then...very healthy and very thriving.

Thanks for the info on the birds where you live!

Grass and Forages (alfalfa, clover, etc.) without supplemental feed is not enough for growing meat animals. If you want to free range them, go for it, but I would include supplemental commercial feed of some sorts.

In my garden, grass is a weed, a fast growing weed, and at this time of year, I can't keep up with it, so, it goes to seed. I see the chickens constantly stripping the seed heads. They know where the good stuff is.
I also allow the the Bahia patch, in my yard, to go to seed, each time between mowings, for the same reason.
