I live in Roanoke Virginia and currently have six golden comets in my backyard. I am wanting to reseed the yard and was wondering if there are mixes that are especially healthy for chickens in my area. I found a site that offers mixes for chickens but they are in the United Kingdom and dont know if they would do well here. It is a mixture of three different kinds of perennial rye grass and two types of clover. Also how high should the grass be before I let the chickens back on it?

I know that my chickens love clover, but I would think they will be happy to have any kind of grass. I have also reseeded my back yard and I am hearing that I should not mow until it is at lest 2 inches tall. I am planning to wait till it is bigger. I would think if you can you should wait until you mow it a couple times. If it is a really large space maybe sooner.

Chickens love clover and delicate new grass. If you go down to your Home Depot or Lowe's, they will have grass seed that will be fine. My feed store sells clover seed bags also. The nice thing about clover seed is that it is so small that even the mice and songbirds have trouble finding it to eat.

They can eat grass at any height that they can reach!
