grassy poop

both of my goslings poop reminds of the stuff you clean out from under the lawnmower. it makes me think they aren't getting any nutrients out of it. they graze, eat feed, and i also feed them fresh greens since i read that goslings can't get a lot of nutrients from old grass.

is the poop normal or telling me i should be doing something else?

OK now . . . I've had geese for years but I can't remember if they have a gizzard

I'm pretty sure they do. Mine eat dirt and little rocks/sand whereever they can find it.

These help in the grinding/digesting process of grass.

Basically, my geese have the best poops . . . little green loafs . . . when they eat just plain ole grass. They look like chewed up grass, and wash away with a hose. Maybe your goslings need a little grit, which will grind up the grass "better". MOST likely though, their poops are exactly what they should be.

Then they have what I affectionately call "seven poops". Apparently every seven poops a goose has are "special", they are dark brown and liquid and VERY smelly. They are a natural product of their digestion, too.

Try giving them more grit. That should help.

Regarding grit: Since they are outside all day, do I still need to supply grit? I didn't think I had to.

Depends, if you have fine sandy soil or heavy clay without any little stones in it about the size of a pea it could help and as long as you don't force them down her throat it can't hurt. I lived on clay and it was a problem until I found a fresh paved road and picked up a handfull of crushed rock without any oil or asphalt on it. The geese would sit and search through stones like a bride shopping for diamonds until they found the ones they wanted. The harder the stones the longer they last and they do wear them out in the end.
