Seems he was facing a bunch of charges and/or being watched pretty closely for animal abuse and neglect. Poor living conditions, dirty cages, under feed animals including horses which he then feed to the lions etc.

I read that a monkey of some kind was still at large and carries the herpes B virus which is not unsafe for the monkey but it is to people.

I really don't know anything about the battles that he had fought and was facing but my take is that the guy had probably been harassed enough that he felt that it wasn't worth fighting any more. Look at those trying to keep a small flock of chickens in the city and the harassment and grief that they get. Multiply that by several times and you might get in his position.

That said killing yourself and letting your animals out is obviously not the right thing to do.
