Then you, of all people, should know that the current situation in this country is TERRIBLE for business owners and job-seekers alike. I'm sure the IRS makes sure you're not too profitable. Or maybe you're a rare bird... A liberal business owner. That would explain a lot.

If I wasn't looking for an answer, I wouldn't have asked. I'm trying to discern where exactly you get your opinions from.

And I specifically stated I went to job interviews IN MY FIELD. Or did you miss that part? Since you aren't looking for gainful employment in the modern, corporate world, my assumption that you are out of touch with the current rate race, is, as usual, spot on. You're a business-owner, and I'm proud of you for that, but you're probably also NOT in your late-20s, early-30s just getting a start in the world with hopes of a family in the future. You struggled and made it, and so will we... But no one can argue that there is *something* wrong in this country that is rotting it from the core.

Do you have any student debt, Dennis?

A lot of people make good money, but they are so buried in student loan debt that they cannot get ahead. The cost of education has sky rocketed. It soon may be more economical to send kids abroad for their higher education.

And then there is the question of whether they will return to the US or practice abroad.

Sadly, emigration may be the only viable alternative for the future generations.

The current situation is NOT terrible for everyone in all the country !
Why is it so important to you that I have a label ?
I get my opinion from the facts, you should try it sometime !
If you are going to group interviews and not getting any jobs, then you are in the wrong FIELD !
Any fools that buildup the student debt that people are now are crazy !

The biggest thing wrong with the country is people crying that things are wrong in the country. Your assumption was as wrong as could be. Who do you think are my customer ? Do you think it's the unemployed or the minimum wage workers that are hiring me ? Not the deep thinker are you.
I went to school learning how to lay carpet and tile, but I was getting paid for it at the same time. I decided I didn't want to keep doing that, so after 8-9 months I quit to do heating and air conditioning, but decided I didn't care for the seasonal work that it was. People here don't use as much heating, so all the money was during the 8-9 months (5-6 busy ones) that it's warm here. Then I learned plumbing, nasty work but real good money. Then I did framing Like that the best. Then I went to work in a factory manufacturing PVC pipe. I worked my way up to running the 3rd shift and then the second shift of a $400 million a year plant, and in another 10-15 may have been running the whole plant. So I took my money and started a company with a friend setting up mobile homes in parks and private properties. So I took all that education I learned (while making money, not debt) and used it to build my business. My friend still does the mobile business and I move on to new construction, and additions.
So I know what is going on in all these fields. I also know who is making money, and it's my job to know who has money to spend on doing additions, and who is looking to build a new house. And who is buying and fixing (flipping) homes. and I also do some flipping.
All you seem to see and care about is your own little bubble of the world. Maybe you should expand your bubble !

MUCH BETTER! I really prefer this to ellipses. Iron sharpens iron, and NO ONE will broaden their horizons without a discussion. :)

I'll be back to this... Don't have time to properly reply right now.

Calm down, Dennis. I'll shall return to ask you more questions!

Student loans,,,what a great rip-off these are. I've heard and read all kinds of horror stories about situations that basically has ruined a person. But,they all knew beforehand when they borrowed, when the money was to begin getting paid back, and also they know everytime they get more their total goes higher. In a way I feel sorry for students that has no other options but this. Maybe because we "planned" the birth of our daughter and had the foresight 20 years ago to begin planning for her education she has afforded all of her 3 years of college so far 100% debt free.

Without going into boring details,,yes,we planned to have our daughter. It was not an accident or miscalculation. Before me and wife got married we discussed a family and agreed on one child about 4 years after we were married. Wife had a great career going and I could be a major part of the childs development. Four years and 1 month after our anniversary we had a daughter. The same week we took out a whole life insurance policy of $250,000 on our daughter and we always paid 25% more than the premium amount was monthly.

Daughter is a junior in high school when she learns from her counselor that the local community college offers 3 scholarships to criteria meeting-eligible students for their upcoming senior year. They can take as many credit hours as if they were a full time freshman student. Our daughter basically gave up her entire senior year in high school to advance into college and be a year ahead of everyone else in her same graduating class. She took summer classes and on-line classes. Then at her high school graduation she was awarded one of the highest paying scholarships offered thru our school district from an elderly deceased couple that had no children and owned about 600 acres of farmland.

Our daughter will have enough credits to start next fall for her senior year at Illinois State University in Bloomington Illinois. Because she took one year free at the local junior college,,took another year at the junior college, got her associates degree, and all the while making sure all her credits transferred, she has only been in the big school one year, where many her age, starts at the big college level. The cost per credit hour at the junior college is about $150,,where at ISU it costs over $450 per credit hour.

And as of right now,,she has not borrowed one dime. She drives home each weekend (ISU is about a 70 mile distance away) and works at a local Taco Bell and manages to normally cram in about 24 hours work between Friday eve to Sunday afternoon before she goes back to ISU. We can borrow about $12,000 a year for 3 years against her life insurance policy yet if she decides to go to graduate school,or study abroad a year. Rufus, you made a point a few posts back about if people cannot afford kids they should not have them,,but we know this isn't the case in every situation. The single parent households with the non support paying other parent are the kids who are born in,and probably never will be able to climb out of that rut. But a student loan offers some of them a chance of breaking the stereotype of todays fast paced generation. Our nations unsecured student loan debt is astronomical. But this too is another way our govt can, and will be able to control people in a catastrophic event or crisis. The people who owe nothing will be best off when the time comes.Even if you do not have a dime in the bank or savings (that money will be lost anyway) when this crisis starts,,having absolutely no debt will be your saving grace.

Blackcopper, our kids came into our life late in life. We were determined to do the best for them that we could. We started putting money ahead right away.

I was working with a little Jewish lady that had a rough past. She lost most of her family during the war. She told me that if I saved, I still would not have enough money to send the kids to the university. The currency inflated faster than I could save.

She suggested that instead of saving money, that I should every pay day buy a small gold item at the pawn shop. The guy at the pawn shop had a lot of rings and other jewelry in stock. He had just loaned a few bucks on each item, so he had a lot of leeway in pricing. His bottom price on an item was the price of gold for that day. When the price of gold fell, I went shopping on my lunch hour.

The pawn shop let me put stuff on lay away, and I would pay it off as I could. I just had to make the payment every week. That worked for me. It froze the price on the item. Plus the item was in his safe until it was paid off, not in my house to be stolen.

Pretty soon, I had my safe deposit box full of other people's gold.

When the price of gold went sky high, I would cash some things out. This helped pay for the kids education. They then went on to law school.

Law school required more money than I had available, so they took out student loans. These loans worked for those that had a plan, but I sure pity those kids that took out loans and got degrees in English literature.
