You might consider adding a general location to your profile so it will show when you post, so folks will know what climate you live in. You mentioned having questions about coops and solar, and I know this will be asked. I would build a different type of coop for NY than I have here. Just a suggestion.
Welcome! Sounds like you have a great setup! And you found just the right place to ask all your chicken-related questions! As someone else mentioned, don't forget about sufficientself.com, the sister forum, where there are a bunch of folks who are off-the-grid or wannabe-off (like me).
We have solar panels here, but they're connected to the grid. We'll get one bill a year for the difference between what we use and what we generate.
Anyways,
Just remember to build your coop for way more chickens than you expect to have... Chicken math is an insidious thing.
Funny thing, it wouldn't let me update part of my profile until I had a certain number of posts. I am in the Champlain Valley on the border NY/VT/Quebec. I edited the main post to reflect that, I hope. I'm still trying to find everything here. I'll stumble upon it eventually.
To dawg53: I have checked the poisonous plants list before, and I have some of them in the woods near my house, and some in my mother-in-law's flower garden. The snow-on-the-mountain was the same stuff grown in her grandmother's garden so I know I can't dig it up. She also has some bleeding heart. Maybe I can fence it in or something. I don't know why I didn't think of that before.

Thank you, and I'm not sure. AFTER I placed the chick order, I thought, "what if chickens are like dogs and some things are toxic to them that aren't us..." and I googled poisonous plants + chickens. Guess where it brought me? To this forum. If you search, you'll find a thread or two from 2009 or so, on the subject. I don't know if linking it will revive the thread, and I don't want to break forum etiquette on my first day.
