I have a 7month old gp. He is great with our chickens and cows. Here's the problem. If my chickens are free ranging all day he's fine. If we come home for a little while and decide to leave, he starts picking on the chickens. On two occasions he has killed one hen and this evening one of my young roos.
Is this just puppy stage or will this continue? Any suggestions?

! Pleased you joined our community! Sorry to hear about your overzealous puppy! I think he can be broken of it but you might need to catch him in the act and then discipline him. Good luck to you!

I did catch him in the act :( Please let it be puppy stage. Maybe he just wants something to chase. Every since we got him, we haven't lost any more chickens to coyotes! Hopefully soon he'll learn!

Maybe he is punishing you for "going away" again. I would not trust him alone with the flock under these circumstances. There have been many articles re: training LGD (livestock guardian dogs) I think if you put that in the search box they may come up. Pups make mistakes but, you don't want it to become a habit
