Great Pyrenese

i am greatly experianced with great pryamise dogs.the following dog is not a pure GP but its a mix. I am worried about the dog being too freindly it can be a promblem being more protective over you that the chicken lol believe it or not. I have also never had a inside dog,and from my experiance dogs like it outside way more than inside,But good luck with your dog

What about the barking? New neighbors on the property next to us have two GPs on a mere 11 acres.. Incessant bark-a-thon. Non-stop. Barking at air. How would anyone know there is something of concern when these crazy dogs bark all. the. time. They've effectively destroyed the peaceful country life we've spent time, emotion, finances, and energy to nurture. Be careful what you wish for, and please consider and respect the proximity and needs of your neighbors when looking at LGDs.

that sounds like a lack of training and management. I have 7 dogs. 3 are german shepherds. You would never know I have dogs. They bark when someone is at the door. None of mine bark at people walking by, kids playing and balls hitting the fence. I know people that have shepherds that never shut up. Barking at the air is not allowed or acceptable in this house--period. My one shepherd, golden and samoyed are in and out all night long, not a peep. If they sees something, they physically come and get me. Any dog that comes into this in starts obedience within 2 weeks and continues for at least a year.

If I were you I would say something to your neighbors because that is not acceptable.

We had a pryanesse, I absolutely love them! They are usually great with kids! And love to be out in the cold..absolutely love it! They are very aloof stubborn dogs. More like a cat than a dog. Ours had a high prey drive with bunnies, terrible to listen to. But otherwise he was fine with everything else. I did not have him with our chickens, he passed away last year. Really a wonderful dog! Fyi the HAIR, the HAIR! Get a good vacuum
It would be a good idea to check to see if they have the parents. Does it matter if it's pure bred? Ours was. But they dont register them with the Akc, because for some reason they are not recognized. Check if it has dewclaws. They also grow until they are 4 or 5.
They have been recognized by Akc since 1933. You may have had a purebred, but the breeder lied too you about being recognized

My neighbor had a female great pyrenees, she was barking all night and she was very protective to livestock and the family, she was even trying to protect my hens 150 metres away, he paid heavy fines when she started biting strangers, eventually he had to rehome her.

Look for double dew claws back legs that will tell you mixed breeds loose them often not guarantee purebred but good bet they do better if not inside each has their own ways but should be no issue with a cockerel

I have a purebred Pyr, acquired to protect my miniature goats and chickens. While they do have great natural protective instincts, in Pearl's case, she lived around chickens and goats but had never actually worked with her supposed charges.

Consequently, she saw the goats as great playthings. She ran and ran and ran with them in their pen. Until my dowager goat, the late and lovely Lily, stopped, stood her ground and gored Pearl with all her might. After the third goring, Pearl had no interest in being around goats at all.

Sigh. She is a big, lovable, goofy, 3-year-old, 96-pound house dog who lets the cat slap her in the face and wags her tail while he's doing it. It's a wonderful, shedding, independent (which is great if you want them to make good decisions about protecting critters outdoors) breed. She is excellent at alerting me when she hears predators outdoors -- and equally good at waking me when bunnies and squirrels are running loose.

I used to think all Pyrs (also known as dis-a-pyrs for their ability to run off at high speed) had to be pure white. Some do have masks, so the photo could be one of those, I think.
