Hi! My name is Joanna and I am married to my best friend, Tim. We have a son who will be 2 in the beginning of June and we are just starting to research coop plans to have our first 2 urban chickens. We live in a small town but are both from out in the country. My brother and father started raising chickens when I was about 8 or 9, and it's been weird not to have chickens and live in town since we've been married. Tim's family used to have chickens, but are now horribly against them because they did not take care to control the smell at all.

We have 2 chickens at my parents' coop right now, they are Rhode Island Reds which were the original breed my dad and brother started with. They now have Easter Eggers and Banty's and others that aren't coming to mind at the moment, as well as turkeys and a goose. The goose is far more broody than the hens and she is now hatching Reds. It's a strange, strange flock out there somedays, but they are very loved and very happy! Our 2 will also be able to fit back into the flock if we are forced to no longer house them.

I found Backyardchickens through Mother Earth News of which I am a subscriber and I adore. My husband actually brought up the idea of having chickens in town, which completely floored me. Over the years he has decided homesteading is a great idea, which is completely different from his previous line of thought but much more fitting.

I also enjoy organic gardening, and composting, of course. I love to sew, read, bake and cook. I'm working full time outside of the home right now, but we are anticipating moving into the country and having me home to tend to the homestead. I bake all of our bread - four loaves on Sunday! I have quite a large garden and also do canning, which will be interesting this year now that I'm working full time too. I attempted to start a community garden at our church last year, but it was lacking support. I also have been enjoying sewing felt food for my son - so far he has a tomato, carrot, corn - removable from husk, and a potato. I think he likes them too.

We also have a pet dog named Io who is 7 years old. I work as a computer technician and I'm also an Avon rep. My husband had to quit his job at the steel mill last summer after he had a heart attack due to a combination of not taking good enough care of himself and hazardous paint fumes. The company has since changed the paint formula and the rules for cleaning the tanks, which is great. Hopefully another family won't have to go through all that! He now has a part time job with the railroad and is a stay at home dad the rest of the week.

    That's us, in a nutshell!

    I forgot! We're from NE Indiana :)
