This is my first time posting here!

I have a hen (can’t remember breed lol) that is a year old and a couple days ago started acting funny. Puffed up, laying down. Yesterday I went to check on her and she was roosted up in the middle of the day and has bright green diarrhea.

We have had some crazy spring weather and it went from warm and sunny to cold and snowy…so I originally thought the slow down was because of that. Also, about a week ago I was in the run turning up the ground to remove all the straw that was laid down during the winter and she was going to town eating earthworms and whatever else she took a fancy too. Is there a chance for mold? Worms?? The only symptoms are the green diarrhea, lethargic and no appetite. Oddly she is drinking a ton of water. She takes a sip every couple minutes it seems. She’ll eat things like scrambled eggs and oatmeal from my hand but won’t touch her feed or anything I place in front of her.

Where do I start? The only thing I had on hand was fenbendazole so put that in the water. Heading to the feed store today. I do not have the option of a vet visit. Im a single mom/single income and just can’t afford it

Welcome To BYC

When is the last time she laid an egg?

Drinking a lot of water...Check to make sure her crop is emptying overnight.

It's not a bad idea to treat for worms. Fenbendazole (Safeguard) is dosed by weight, so I would treat her directly instead of putting it in the water. Dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight give orally once a day for 5 days.

I will pick up a different form of safeguard as I only had the powder for dogs. I’ll also treat my other girls (I only have 3 hens)
She is having very consistent runny diarrhea (that doesn’t stink! - hardly at all) all my chickens lay the exact same color/size of egg but I’m fairly sure she last laid about 3 days ago. I plan to soak her/clean her up today and feel around better to see if maybe she’s egg bound. But her diarrhea has some chunks in it and I thought with egg bound hen they can’t really poop? She also makes zero attempt to stand up.

*edit*
Upon pulling her out to massage crop and getting a better feel. Hard ball was just her neck lol. I was awkwardly reaching in to feel on first attempt

Her crop is very full and squishy (but she’s been drinking all night. And I feel a hard ball in her neck just above! I’ve never tried emptying one 😖 ill have to YouTube it

I would not try to vomit her, you risk her choking.

I would treat the crop as sour if it's full and squishy. Instructions are in the link below.
Miconazole is commonly used, as well as, Clotrimazole. I usually use Clotrimazole because I can *most of the time* find it at the Dollar Tree, but who knows with supplies now a days.
I would use whichever you can get that's the most economical. Miconazole is found in the women's feminine section, Clotrimazole is found in the athlete's foot section. Both are anti-fungal/yeast.

If you are feeling a hard ball just above the crop, do incorporate the coconut oil in too. See if you can lightly massage downward. I wonder if she's got a ball of grass/hay in there. Let's hope it can pass. Do let her have water, never withhold water. Food, I'd still offer it, a few bits of soft cooked egg or wet feed is good.

Crop problems are often a symptom of an underlying condition - worms, reproductive problems, etc. I would still deworm, but it sounds like she may just have a blockage. Hopefully you can get that moving, it may take several days. Don't give up.

Thank you so much.

I picked up the Clotrimazole and gave her her first dose. Also picked up paste version of the de-wormer and will dose her for 5 days. Got some electrolytes and probiotics to put in water.
I am giving her a warm epsom salt soak now to clean up her bottom and will gently blow dry her after. Once I put her in the soak she started kind of rocking back and forth??
She’s eaten a bit of scrambled eggs today and took a couple pecks at her crumble but that’s it. Still drinking a ton of water.

Hopefully you can get the crop to clear.
Sometimes there's an underlying condition like worms or reproductive problems that causes the crop to slow.

Keep us posted on how she's doing.

She died about an hour ago :( she went down hill crazy fast.
Now I’m keeping a close eye on the other two. Worming them just in case and thinking about treating for coccidiosis just in case? Thoughts?

I'm sorry to hear that:(

Treating for Coccidiosis won't hurt anything. Do you have liquid or powdered Corid?

You mentioned you turned the run bedding last week...was there any mold or old feed under there?

Yes, I do believe I would go ahead and treat for worms and Coccidiosis both. There's no contraindications that I know of between the Safeguard and Corid.

Ok thank you.

When I turned the ground in the run there was some straw that was molding and very well old feed too. Yesterday I went out and turned the entire run again but this time made sure to rake everything up and haul it out of there. I also dumped the feed, cleaned it out and put fresh feed in as well as cleaned out the bedding in the coop.

Today I will treat the water with Corid. I have the liquid kind that is 9ish %
