After 6 months of one of my EE's always laying green eggs, I got 2 very blue eggs one week. Anybody else ever have this happen? She is now back to laying all green eggs. Maybe something in her diet? I was so excited to see blue eggs that I didn't eat them for weeks, just opening the carton every day to marvel at the wonder. I finally gave in and ate them, best tasting eggs ever!Ha!

Sometimes they do that. It is often when a pullet is in its early laying stages and still fixing out its quirks, such as egg color, size, shape, etc. The color may fade, darken, or in your case go more to the blue side.

After 6 months though it may have been either a start/change in her laying cycle or something about the environment. It shouldn't have been a "true blue" though, as she'd need the genetics for that.

Green eggs come from a brown layer of pigment over the top of a blue egg. Chickens that lay green eggs have a blue egg laying breed and a brown egg laying breed of chicken in their family background. Chickens that lay brown eggs have a tendency to lay a darker egg at the start of the season and gradually have it lighten. As the brown layer on a green egg gets lighter, you will see more of the blue color show through.

I had this happen too. One of my Orp/EE's started out laying pretty olive green eggs (she started laying in February) and now her eggs are are a pretty sagey blue color. It was gradual, almost like the brown overtint that caused the olive color was running out. She's still less than a year old, so I wonder if there will be more changes as she gets older (less green/more green, etc.). It's really interesting to see the changes in eggs as the girls get older.

My EE's egg color varies, not significantly but its a little different color from egg to egg (can't say day to day here, she lays about 3 or 4 a week) but its the inside of the EE's egg shell that is a beautiful blue color consistently

Thanks all for the different opinions. That's why I love this place. Yes, the inside of my EE green eggs do show some blue coloring too, but the outside shell color of robin's blue was just a 2 time miracle I guess. As for all my other hens, which have been laying almost a year (some 2 years) they have all gone from a medium brown to a lighter paler brown, which I am told is normal as they age. Guess I will have to get a Maran or wellsummer to darken things up a bit.

I have a little EE girl that does this too. Sometimes her eggs are a bluish green and other times her eggs are bright robins blue. Its interesting to say the least. Also, I notice that if the egg is just laid (only a few minutes old) it looks much more blue than it does a few hours later.

Fun stuff
