I have been feeding my chickens handfulls of Grass and Clover over the past 3 or 4 days. Some are really addicted to it, while others don't really want any at all...then there are those who are inbetween.
I have had a few chickens die...which I originally believed was from different circumstances.
#1 was a new roo that was attacked by another rooster and then escaped and got some feathers plucked by my dog. No real external injuries that I could see. But I figured when I saw him dead that it might have been from some sort of shock or stress.
#2 was a meat roo that we were going to see if we could get him to breed. I know that meat chickens tend to have health problems and die if they aren't dispatched around a certain age/size. I know they can have heart problems and their legs can go out for example. So I assumed he had a heart attack.
Now I have a third hen who is not well. She lays down with one wing half spred out like she's hot and cooling down. But she won't move but is alert. I noticed that she had a little green poo stuck to some of her tail feathers. I also noticed a wound underneath her wing that looks old but has a new Split or crack in it. It appears to be where someone was pecking at her earlier in the year.
I have also noticed a few of my roosters who have greenish stains on their tail feathers and some poo's that are really just mashed grass it appears.
I'm wondering if I'm just running into some coincidental bad luck or if this may be all tied in.
I'm feeding Performace Super Cock to the chickens and they also get scratch and whole corn as treats. Like I said, I've also been giving them hand fulls of clover and Grass. I have started Applecider Vinigar in their water recently since it has started getting warm outside.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks,
heather
