Hi all feather loving friends. I`m new and never raised a flock before and have 3 4 week old chicks, I lost one today due to human error and am heart broken. My question is, I want to get another to round out the flock but the chicks at the feedstore are younger then the ones I have, should I keep them separate or are 4 weeks old not to old to introduce say, 2 weeks old?

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry about the one you lost. You can try to mix the two ages. Generally after 2 weeks of life, the pecking order is beginning to be established. So just be very watchful to see how it goes. And watch closely for at least one week.

I would start the heat out somewhere between the two ages. So somewhere in the low 80's to 80 degrees. Watch them closely and good luck!

Oh, and keep us posted on how it goes! :)

Yes, thanks, google is my best friend and now of course BYC. They are funny lil creatures aren`t they. Looking forward to getting a couple more as I can`t buy one chick, just doesnt seem right.

I did the same thing! I bought four chicks, then three weeks later I got four more. Three weeks was probably a little over the "totally safe" age limit, but I watched them carefully and had no problems at all. The older chicks were leghorns, the younger ones mixed. I hope it works out as well for you!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the loss of your first chick. Good luck with the new ones, X2 keep a close eye on them, buy they are close enough in age there is a good chance you will be OK, especially since you are adding more than one.

Ok, cant wait for new peeps, they are new characters in my life for sure. Gonna respect how quick things can happen more now for sure kelsie2290.

Just let the new ones get a week older or see if they can get along it really all depends on the individual chick .......
Thanks, just what I was going to do thought one of the three I bought was from the batch I bought origonally so older then the two Ameraucanas ( which I love) but the hubs talked me into putting them all together and seeing and they are doing great. Watching them single file down the ramp this morning was so dear with the lil ones right on the others heels. The flock. :)
