Greenhouse Coop Conversion

Blackberrys! The look on your face says it all. LOL

Nice job.

I think my chickens just decided your coop is better then theirs! Wow so very nice, hadnt thought of using a greenhouse setup.

Awesome conversion! I love your coop! What are the finished mesurments, and how many chickens?

The coop is just over 10' wide and about 70' long, including the playpen/dust bath area. Then there is a fenced pasture/orchard/forest with about 300' perimeter fencing. We do have 5 of the younger roosters in their own special housing which is just outside the coop in the shade of the same sequoia tree. Even on the hottest days here (over 100 a few times this summer) it hasn't been comparatively "cool" in the shadiest end of the coop, and there is usually a nice breeze, especially in the late afternoon. The girls tend to come in when the sun gets too strong out in the pasture.

This fall/next spring I want to expand the pasture, plant more trees for the orchard and reseed the ground in there with more clover and low grasses for the hens, and maybe water it a bit during super dry spells. Here in Oregon stuff tends to go pretty dormant in the summer because summers are so dry, but I would like the chickens to have more salad to eat, and I think it would also help attract more bugs.

We've been ignoring the orchard for a while, and I've never seen our apples look so promising as they do this year. I really like the idea of having chickens share space with fruit trees. The chickens also really seem to enjoy the part of the pasture which is under some evergreens.

I think greenhouses could become hothouses if there isn't good shade cover ... But due to my complete lack of carpentry skills, I really liked having something with some structural integrity to build around. If the greenhouses were more "hoop" style, there might be a few more challenges, but it could still work.
