I use two Producer's Pride Defender coops together for my garden to protect my plants from deer and other wildlife. When it gets cold, I wrap the whole thing in greenhouse plastic which raises the temperature 10-20 F. This year, when it got too cold for plants and the coop I actually use for chickens became compromised because it shifted and I couldn't close the door securely, I put the chickens in the greenhouse along with a bale of straw and their nesting boxes. Then it got really cold and I realized that this setup would keep my birds sufficiently warm. Their water barely even froze even when it was 4 F. They are eating the seeds from the straw and aerating the soil so I'm confident that I can move the birds back out in a few weeks, put down some compost and get my garden started early this year. It worked really well.

There is a two inch gap between the sheet of plastic over the roof and the continuous sheet that I wrap around the sides. On warmer days above 30 F, I open up one side to air everything out.
