Hello, new member here. I live in the beautiful, and climate challenged UP of Michigan (it's practically Canada!). My husband and I sold our house "in town" and have moved 25 miles north...to a little town of less than 300. We will be building our new home in a couple more month on 40 acres of paradise. I don't have any chickens yet, but we do have a building that will become the coop and I am hopeful I can start my adventure in September. But for now I just keep reading and learning. And wishing....those baby chicks are so darn cute!

Hi :welcome Julie

Glad you could join the flock! Wishing you the very best of luck with your house build and getting your chicken adventure started. 40 acres sounds great!!
If you have not already drop by the learning centre for some great articles on getting started https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Be sure to ask any questions you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly. Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Congrats on your new property and plans for your own flock.

IMO your location will make starting with baby chicks in September more of a challenge than a spring start. Do make sure your coop/brooder plans include how you plan to move them to the coop in what I think will be winter weather. You should check out Where am I, Where are You? forums to connect with folks who have the same cold weather issues for suggestions to aid you in your plans.

I am so glad you have joined us. Feel free to ask questions and participate in the forums. Good luck with your new home building and plans for your own flock.

Thank you for the welcome, and the advice. I am hoping to get some pullets in September from a nearby breeder. I'll add baby chicks in the spring. Timing is everything though and if the coop can be constructed sooner, which might be possible, then I would get the chicks. I currently only live about 1/2 mile from where the house would be constructed. And I could certainly do something temporary here;the house we are renting also has quite a bit of acreage :)
