Oh Bamberg! Lovely little town! So you are missing out on Dunkle Weissen? Have you tried Googling and see if there were any German food stores in your area? Not to say anything, but I drank a few Saturday night :thumbsup good stuff!

Welcome! This is a great place for research. I spent most of a year reading and thinking before getting to where we got our chicks. Ours are just about to go out into the coop.
 
So please allow me to update everyone! After looking at all the designs and plans to build a coop, and pricing wood, I made the decision to buy a coop instead. We found a great website that ships all over Europe..... https://en.joypet.eu/
We choose a coop without a run and then we built a run and sat the coop on top of it. Then we bought a poultry net and enclosed about 20 meters of our garden (yard).
After setting everything up, buying feed, bedding and the small items, we started looking for a breeder. Luck would have it, we found one only 25km away! The big day arrives for us to go and look at (inspect) the girls. All three kids piled into the car and away we were! Each one saying what they wanted....for my youngest (6), she wanted a white one!
After looking over the 5 flocks, each of the monsters, I mean kids, made their choice. My oldest son (16) went with an Amrock, my oldest daughter (12) with a White Sussex and the youngest opted for an Leghorn, because it was all white.
We have had them for a week now and they are well adjusted. My biggest thrill so far is watching my girls get up 30 minutes earlier and prepare the feeder and exchange the water, without being told to! Then in the evening, they go to the coop and tell the girls "good night". Had I know this, I would have gotten the hens about 5 years ago! :)
Now to just get them ready for another +36 Celsius day!

Congratulations!!
I use very large plastic cereal containers, nearly fill them with water then freeze them. I thaw them upside down until the ice block pops out then put the block of ice in a large shallow plastic bin and allow it to slowing melt. I also run a fan in my run but I have a solid roof and I wired my coop. But the ice water helps. They like to sip it and wade in it.

So your Grandfather was German! So was my mom, she was 3 when my Grandparents uprooted with the younger half of the family before WWII. You should research your Grandfather and discover where they come from. I did that the first time I came to Germany in 1978. And I am still in contact with those I found!
