2nd year chicken raiser here. Had to start a new flock this year as all 9 of our layers were killed a few days ago by an unknown predator. Looking foward to learning and talking with other fellow chicken peeps.

Hi jskates and
welcome-byc.gif

This is a good time of year to plan your new flock. Some of us are hatching late because o the hard winter. Other hatched early and will be trimming their flocks in the coming months for overwintering. It's a great time of year to get on breeder's waiting lists for started birds. these would be Spring hatched and make good winter layers. Check around on the BYC Breed lists for your chosen breeds and ask around. That way you will be on track to hatch chicks with the rest of us next Spring and redeem the time lost with the sad loss of your flock.
Honestly, I started out with eggs and baby checks multiple times. This time I started out with started birds. It was such a superior way to begin, I always recommend it above the other two.
Best Regards,
Karen

Please head for the predators threads and beef up security or you will be replacing your birds often.
Do you know how the predator got in? Did it kill them all at once, or over a period of time. Once a predator gets an easy meal they keep coming back for more.

You should post on the pred. thread and detail what happened to your birds - someone on there may be able to pinpoint what predator did the damage.

Agreed with this. Here's a link to the predator and pest part of the forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/13/predators-and-pests

Best of luck with your new flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new flock. Sorry about the loss of your old one, hope you are able to figure out what the predator was.

Greetings everyone, my name is a man, I've been raising chickens now for two months. I have 10 RIR'S AND 2 black sex links hens and 1 BSL rooster. The BSL are younger, can anyone tell me the best way to introduce the younger birds
