This is my first time owning birds. I've started with 25 birds. There are 5 silver-laced wyandottes, 5 partridge rocks, 5 buttercups, 5 dark cornish, and 5 buff orpingtons. There are no roosters in my henhouse!

The flock is about 2.5 months old, they were purchased and delivered May 17 from McMurray Hatcheries.

So far, I'm in love with the buttercups and cornish for personalities. They are very curious birds and the most likely from the flock to approach and see what you are doing. One of my buttercups has aspirations of becoming a parrot; she does love to perch on my shoulder whenever I enter the run or chicken house. The orpingtons are next on the list for friendlyness, with the wyandottes being reserved, but not skittish. So far, the rocks are the only ones to display any skittishness at being around me.

Mostly, I got chickens for my toddler to learn where eggs come from. I got a sizable flock because I have a lot of spare room for them and figure I can always sell the extra eggs or give them away to neighbors. I love it! I get such a kick out of watching my flock! They are mostly well-adjusted and I have had no problems with them picking on each other at all. I can't wait to start reading the forums and learning more about the fun past-time of back yard chicken raising!

Oooooh! You're in trouble now! Ya know what they say...once you have chickens, there's no going back!

Sounds like you have a nice variety of chickens! I wanted some SLW's but decided that 12 chickens would be a better start than 18 (didn't want to have more than I could handle), I have 6 RIR's and 6 Buff O's. I have had such good luck with my 12 (no illnesses or losses) that I really wish I had got the SLW's too! The place where I bought the first ones don't hatch over the hot summer, but I found another place that had some, but DH said no, I didn't need anymore. I know I really don't, 11 hens will give us more eggs than we can ever eat, but...SLW's are sooo pretty! ***Buy what you need, not what you want!*** I hate that saying!

The SLW's are just starting to fill out their lacing too! I can't wait to see how they look once the feathers are all done coloring up. I'm really happy with my flock of 25. All of my ladies seem to be content and I don't notice any underdogs yet. We have a huge run though, it's about 40'x10' and about 8' tall and covered. I'll have to take some photos and post them. The buff orpingtons seem to be great, easy-going birds, though they always seem to be the first to try to eat my barn shoes! I've had pretty good luck with the flock so far, only one loss. A freak accident involving a small sheet of plywood and our only bonus bird, a buff-laced Polish, who is now no more. She was just starting to get her crown filled in too! Other than that, no diseases, no pests! I've got my fingers crossed!

Yes! I'm up in Jackson County, just outside of Sylva and Cherokee. There are lots of chicken enthusiasts in the area! Our neighbors are into show rabbits now, but used to be chicken enthusiasts. In fact, it's been so long since my neighbor bought his chickens from McMurray, that his original order of 25 birds only cost him $5.25! *sigh* If only the prices remained the same!
