I am new to this forum, and new to backyard poultry. Here in my neck of the woods, as a kid, my dad would allow us to have the "occasional" small chick or duckling on Easter. Painted pink or blue from the Kimball Feed store down the block from us. We raised it until fully grown. Only to realize that the chick would become a rooster that would chase us around, or a large white lazy duck named Ernie. As time went by, I would wonder about having a proper chicken coop with beautiful hens, laying beautiful eggs. Fresh and in different colors. I was gifted a small chick years ago that I named Chirp, and she was more of dog than a hen! She loved cuddling next to my chow chow Scrapper. She would and I am not joking, lay on his rump, with his curled puffy tail on top of her. One day, I actually found an egg! So, it goes, she would go about the house laying the random egg, here and there. I had a small nesting place for her, but she preferred my bookshelf. It was like an hunting for eggs. Now, 20 years later and retired, I am melancholy about getting that coop with two chickens perhaps. I joined this forum in order to read and meet like minded folks like myself. I also enjoy doing Ukrainian Pysanky, or egg decorating as well I sew, bake, paint and read a lot. Thank you for letting me share my story.
