Just joined the web site and i am looking forward to better preparing ourselves for our first chickens and coops. A little about me is im from North Texas area and am married (21 years) and have 2 kids and 2 dogs. My oldest (19) is a big help to us around the house and to our youngest (5) who is now cancer free for nine months. The Chickens are part of our way to remain active with him and show him everything we can. He was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer about 1 1/2 years ago. So that being said as i get to know you all bear with me as i try to learn all about this and make it a fun experience for all of us.

As part of going through this as a family we have started a YouTube channel of our antics and fun as a family. Once we start getting the coop ,chickens etc all put together i will vlog it. If you would like you can check us out and subscribe to our channel @: https://www.youtube.com/user/Tisadas4

Welcome to BYC, Tim. Glad you decided join our flock. What part of north Texas are you in? My wife and I were both raised in north Texas? I'm glad you youngest child has been cancer free for 9 months and pray that continues. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop built and in getting your flock.
 
We are in Arlington Michael. Thanks for the offer.. as you can imagine i have some concerns about our crazy weather here, what type of chickens to get etc etc....

My wife and I were both raised not far from where you are (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me), and I have relatives not far west of Arlington in Weatherford, TX. We've been to Arlington many times to see the Texas Rangers play, to Six Flags Over Texas, etc. There is a lot to see and do in your area. As to what type of chickens to get, I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars). They are friendly and hardy, egg laying machines which handle northeast Texas heat and humidity very well. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. No matter what type of chickens you end up getting, good luck with your flock. :eek:)
