Greetings Fellow Chicken Lovers!

awww how cute i love the names you picked , I HAD A Thelma & Louise , back in the 1980s , I rescued them , they were in a small hot metal cage out by the side of the road in the hot summer sun in F la, a sign said for sale, i jammed on my brakes and ran into this tiny shack, that sold garden things , i said how much for the both hens , they wanted $12.00 each , i took them , got them just to get them out of that horrible killer sun & out of a cage that was burning them ,& gave them a good home , as it turned out about a week later Thelma & Louise became broody in their little coop i built for those 2 ladies sitting side by side , so i called a friend that had some chickens & a rooster, and asked if i could have 2 eggs , he laughed and gave me 2 eggs which i gave to Thelma & Louise and they hatched 2 very tiny and unusual looking chicks one mostly white a female & one mostly black a male, Thelma & Louise were such happy mama hens , its was so sweet to see them out free ranging with their tiny peeps , and in no time my tiny flock became 20 birds in a very short time HA, and all unusual looking birds to, i found out later on the original eggs came from birds from Bush Gardens that Bush Gardens got straight from Africa ...lol.. my friend worked there and took eggs home that made up his flock ,so mine were all wild African mixes & they all slept in the trees, and were mostly a wild bunch of multi colored birds HA . i eventually left Fla. and my wild flock went to a friend with a big farm in Brooksville Fla, were im sure there are still some of my original wild flock still living in the trees down there , so they lived happily ever after, im glad this story about Thelma & Louise had a sweet happy ending , better then the movie did i gotta say HA  :p

Thanks for all the welcoming messages! I do have a question: I have the water bucket with nipples on it. I have tried to teach them how to use it, but they just don't seem all that interested. I have heard to take all other water sources away so they'll be forced to use it. I'm reluctant to do this, but really want them to use the bucket. Any ideas?
How high is your bucket? Can they stretch out their necks and reach the nipples? I use nipples from one day old. I tap a few of their beaks on the nipple and watch them drink. After that, we have teachers and students--but all figure it out quickly. Best to remove all other water sources and watch them...

just a heads up i found this great wash tub , just right to bath chickens , better then a the kitchen sink ,its deeper and can be use out side , i got it at the dollar general for >> $5.00...!!!! cant beat that price , its sturdy and comes in handy for all kind of things, i just used it to hold all my frozen food i took out of my freezer so i could repair my refrigerator today, as it stopped working last night, so golly thank you dollar general. this tub is wonderful...!!! i got the last one here in bisbee AZ , So go see if your dollar general has a few ...!!! you wont regret it .;):thumbsup

i do the same with water bottles i make with the nipples & a gallon jug or a gator aid bottle all depending the nippel bottles are great for traveling , i start the nipple bottles after they are a week old and also have the regular old fashion water drinkers in with them, just to be sure every one gets water, so hey good going on your part ...!!!

yes just keep both the nipple water feeder and the old fashioned water feeder in with them , and give it a few days to a week or as long as it takes, you dont have to worry if you do it that way, and they will be attracted to the shiny metal tip of the nipple water feeders, i dont like removing the old kind of water feeders (( until )) all my chicks have are using nipple water drinkers, because the brooder is constantly heated and a chick can easily get dehydrated and die , so its not a race to see how fast the chicks get it HA , so leaving both kinds of water feeders in with them , its ok to do that ,until they are all using the nipple drinker ,then you can remove that old fashioned water feeder , and believe me they all love that nipple water feeder, its almost surprising how fast they begin using it so after that no worries, it should be fine..!!!

Hi
I live in a semi rural area of the Pacific Northwest out on the Olympic Peninsula. We have 2-1/2 semi wooded acres, which I love very much.
I have 10 chickens, 8 are about 6 weeks old and 2 "Little's" that are two weeks old.
This is my first "herd" of chickens and so far, I really like it. I have the following breeds:
  • Barnevelder ("Cagney")
  • Welsummer ("Lacey")
  • New Hampshire Red ("Lucy")
  • Swedish Flower ("Ethel")
  • 2 Easter Eggers ("Thelma & Louise")
  • Black Australorp ("Laverne")
  • Buff Orphington ("Shirley")
  • 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes ("Gertrude & Alice B")
I grew up and lived just outside San Diego most all my life. Moving here was quite a change, but so far I love it here.
So far I have discovered that my girls love corn on the cob, blueberries and meal worms. It's been hot enough here lately that they will getting frozen watermelon very soon.
I am growing some red clover and when they get a bit bigger, we'll have a field trip and free range out there.
I'm always interested in tips and tricks and love to gain knowledge from those who have been chickening a while.
WELCOME...!! your flock sounds great..! and my goodness you are doing all the right things for you girls & i love all the wonderful names you picked , sooo glad you joined ...!!!! have a great day & take care
