Dennis and i live on east coast of Florida near Kennedy Space Center. We have been chicken parents for over 10 years and currently have 7 back yard girls consisting of 1 Fayoumi, Buff Orpington, Australorp, ISA brown, and 3 speckled Sussex hens-ALL LAYING!
They free range during the day when we are home and have an open air coop with nesting boxes and ladder type roosts. All do well even in this summer heat and humidity.
Our 8 year old granddaughter loves to pick up a girl for cuddling. Most for the girls are very patient with Amelia and tolerate time in the kiddie pool or birdbath as well as squirt gun time.
Thank goodness we have great neighbors who laugh when a wandering hen visits their yard ( after jumping the fence- and yes we trim their feathers regularly) They always return quickly when they hear my voice and come running for treats!
My favorite past time is sitting in the shade, listening to their chatter and enjoying the retired life!
