Hello! My husband and I are looking to build our own coop and have 4 hens for pets and eggs. We've never done this before and are just now combing through coop plans, trying to decide what'd be best for our (future) gals! We're both obsessed with doing things the right and best way possible and very eager to learn from others!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! How exciting for you to be starting your chicken adventures :celebrate
Lots of coop plans and ideas that you can use in the coop section. I'm sure you will make a great job of it. The learning centre is also a great place for lots of articles on keeping your girls happy safe and healthy. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas not too far from where you are (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me). We have been to Arlington on numerous occasions to visit Six Flags Over Texas, the Texas Rangers Ball Park, Seven Seas Marine Life Park, etc. I also have relatives in Weatherford, TX, which is not too far from Arlington either (at least by Texas standards). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop built.

so glad you have joined us. Let the fun begin, planning and learning before acquiring your flock is the best way to start.

My advice is to start with baby chicks if you have a place to brood them, the fun and attachment is just too much to miss. Find a resource that offers sexed baby chicks or get sex-linked to avoid issues of drawing a roo. But do realize even experts in sexing day old chicks are not 100%, and make plans just in case you have to find a new home if any turn out male. And if you do elect to start with babies, do so in the spring, so much easier to transition outdoors.

I think your climate is similar to mine, I'm in Georgia. Pick a location that offers summer shade to help reduce heat issues. Even in the winter, my hens seem to prefer the shadier areas.

Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help. Good luck with your plans for acquiring your own backyard chicken pets.

Thank you everyone! I must admit, I am a bit hesitant to get chicks only because I feel the work would be a little too much with a toddler? I will look into this more because I would love chicks to raise and bond with. My other concern would be getting attached to an unknown rooster and having to let him go :(

As for the hen house, seeing it from the house is a must for us. We're wanting to find a design that might accommodate being against our dining room window so we can see them...just not sure if that'd be too stressful on the hens. SO MUCH TO DECIDE!
