Homestead Hackery
In the Brooder
Hello, and WOW are there a lot of new introductions! We bought our 3.3 acre homestead in October here near the center of the northern Hemisphere. Just got our first batch of 33 baby chicks last Thursday as the snow storm was starting. We bought a variety of chicks for a rainbow of egg colors, but we weren't told what breed so we're still trying to figure that out! Between a combination of their slow journey here, weather, and being our first time, we lost a third of them by the end of the weekend, shockingly we lost the four roosters that were sent. We shored up the brooder and the rest appear to be very stable. I am here to share our experience and learn what others have done so I can stop scouring the internet trying to find answers.
A bit about us, we are a family of 8 with 6 young kiddos yet. We've kept ourselves busy but never got out to the country until this fall. We've spent the last 5 years building a special needs playground in Wausau WI in memory of our son (see www.jojosjungle.org). Now this is a new chapter in life for us and we are looking forward to it so much!
The next few weeks will be building a coop inside the 30'x30' unheated half of our outbuilding.
