I am very happy to have found this forum. Today my very first chick hatched in an incubator that is sitting right next to the computer where I am typing this message. It is peeping away and I can only hope that it is calling to the chicks in the other 4 eggs that it is time for them to come out and join him/her! (Up until now we only had chicks from cooperative broody hens - much less work!)
We have been keeping chickens for about 20 years. It all began when my husband, who used to work as a career counselor, did some work for a client. We found out that the client did not have any money to pay for his sessions once they were complete but he offered us 35 laying hens in lieu of cash. We must have been ready for this new challenge as that weekend I built a temporary shelter and prepared for our flock. We gave half of the original group to my brother and over the years our flock has numbered as high as 43, and as low as 12 - where we are today. Hopefully more eggs will hatch and there should be plenty of time for them to get feathered out and ready for the great outdoors before the weather turns too cold. Their outdoor house will be all set up and ready to go in a few days. Wish me luck!
