Hello all.

I am new to Louisiana and new to chickens. However, finally I have the space to raise my own chickens in the backyard and would really need some help and tips regarding the best breed to fit my needs and breeders.

I am looking into consuming both eggs and meat so I would want to have chickens that preferably be able to fit both (other than raising meat chicks and broilers).

I don't know if this would be the right place to ask if anyone has an idea of meat rabbit breeders too, and maybe also Mullard Ducks?

Thanks a million.
Myka.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC!
You might like to check out the Duck forum for duck info https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks and the Livestock forum for rabbits, if you go to BackYardHerds there is a whole section on rabbits https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/22/other-pets-livestock
As for breeds, Here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds.

Welcome to BYC, Myka. Glad you decided join our flock. Based on your criteria, I would recommend Australorps. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy in both heat and cold, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard brown egg laying breeds. There is an excellent current thread focusing on Black Australorps at https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/988347/chicken-breed-focus-australorp that is well worth taking a look at. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you determine which breed is best for you. Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Even if you don't purchase your birds from Murray, the "chick selector" is still a valuable tool. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Great info has been provided above. Dual purpose breeds would be best for you. These include: australorps, rhode island reds, buff orpingtons, barred rocks, sussex, sex links, wyandottes, easter eggers and more.
