Greetings from Sumatra, the motherlode of chicken genetics! I moved here from the UK earlier this year (just before the lockdowns) and wasted no time getting into raising chickens. My mother-in-law gave me a hen and a pullet in April and with a bit of help from our neighbours’ cockerels we now have two cockerels (one we bought, one we raised here), three laying hens, four three-month old chicks (3f, 1m), seven one-month old chicks, four one-week old chicks and three eggs that should hatch in the next few days.
Our chickens are typical of the village chickens in this region, a mix of gamefowl and junglefowl-type birds.
Our birds are free-range from day 1 and range well beyond the boundaries of our plot, but that’s normal here, and our neighbours chickens do the same.
