Hi all!! I haven't got my girls yet, I'm in the planning stage right now. I have the space picked out, I'm planning on using half of my current shed for the coop as I can only have a few where I live, and really, how many does an old widow need! I'm a country girl who's stuck in town for now

and this will be a first for me, I've only raised horses to this point. I hope and expect chickens to be easier. This looks like a great place to learn all about my new hobby.

My plans are to have organic, free range chickens, the eggs for my own consumption. So, if anyone else is doing this, I would love to hear your advise, experiences, input.

From Oregon. I'm a country girl living in the city, I started with 3 hens last spring and I couldn't be happier, they are really easy to keep, and I cant believe I waited so long to get chickens. My only problem is I want more, in fact I've added to my original 3, I now have 5, with more babies brooding in my house, & yet more eggs in the incubator. Having chickens is addicting, and just down right fun. Mine free range in my backyard on nice days when it's not raining, and they seem to be very happy hen's. They are tame and follow me all around the yard, they come when called, and eat my kitchen scrapes. I think you'll be very happy with your new future hen's..Good luck & ask any questions here on the forum, there is a wealth of info here.
 
IT's good you are planning. Some people just plunge right in and really don't know what they are in for, but you will love having chickens. The only problem with chickens they are addicting and you always want just a few more, than the hatching starts.... Any who welcome from western pa and good luck on your venture with your chicks.

Hello!! I am a first day newbie too!! We have had 4 for ladies for the last year and we have just ordered 16 chicks. We were nervous to have anymore until we knew we could handle them. We got our original set in July last year at 6 months old and they did well in the winter here in upstate NY and they love free range!! They do have the barn to go in if the weather is bad, but they are silly and will hang out in the rain they love it so much outside. We are excited to start our new set from chicks. I look forward to hearing about your new adventures : )
