Hi all!
figured i have been lurking long enough, may as well join up. Just a little about me.

Living in southern Maine, nice little town. Built my house about 10 years ago, sort of in the middle of town, but also in the middle of the woods. Kinda the best of both worlds. Well....we have a tick problem here. And I thought that a few chickens may be just what I need to help with that. Plus you all know the whole egg thing is kind of nice. I've bought fresh eggs from a guy that used to work for me years ago, and they were the best ever. So here I am with (6) 4 week old Buff Orpingtons (as advised from the lady at the Agway) living in my garage for a couple more weeks. I also have a 4 year old Black Lab female that thinks these things are new play toys. Still working on trying to overcome years of breeding and instinct. We'll see how that goes.
Well that's it for now, I will go lurk some more, and maybe poke my nose into a couple threads here and there.

Welcome to BYC!

And congrats on your new chicks! Buff Orpingtons are a great breed to own. Very docile and friendly and are also great layers.

Be very careful with the dog. Most dogs see chickens as dinner and are very difficult to get this trained out of them. Lots of threads in our emergency section on how the dog ate my chickens. We do have some threads on how to train your dog to behave around the birds, but not all dogs respond to these training techniques. So it is best to build a nice run and never let the birds out when the dog is on the loose...

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Chicken egg's from the back yard are the best but for ticks chickens will eat them but not as many as you would like for that you need to steep up a notch in noise

We bring you the Guinea hen tick eater and all around bug eater ..

And a dog repellent of sorts

Can cohabitate with others

With all the different types of birds we have the guinea is the one who really controls the bug population and also the one who really controls the tick problem
