Hello! We have just started getting into chickens. We bought a cheap, used coop off Craigslist and bought 5 Rhode Island Red hens from one my daughter's friends. We are off to a rough start, we lost one already, I think our dog's welcome was a bit too aggressive. We now have a fence up around the coop, and the dog is not out when then chickens are! Looking forward to learning lots here.

Yes be sure to watch the contact of your dogs and flock. They usually don't get along.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Sorry for the loss of your hen. As many BYC members can attest (some to their sorrow), dogs and chickens don't usually mix well. We've had new members post who were horrified because their dog (even small ones like chihuahuas) suddenly and unexpectedly chased and killed their chickens. Once a dog has started chasing and killing chickens, it is next to impossible to break them from doing it again. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your RIRs.

As you found out the hard way, dogs + chickens usually = trouble.

Sorry for your loss. Sadly dogs(or cats) + chickens = dead chickens. Dogs think they are squeaky toys and once they stop squeaking (dead) they usually go on to the others. Welcome to Backyard chickens.
