(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I started with my first few chickens just over a year ago. I had always toyed with the idea of keeping chickens since I live on a third acre, but when a friend who teaches 3rd grade hatched eggs as a science project, I decided the time was right since he needed to find homes for the chicks.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Ugh... chicken math!! I always intended on keeping only 6 but I have 9.
(3) What breeds do you have?
It's a motley crew. I've acquired a few as rescues and purchased others.
1 Delaware, 1 Salmon Faverolle (rescued together from someone who decided keeping chickens wasn't for her.)
Two speckled cross breeds. They were supposed to be olive-eggers, but lay brown due to impure bloodlines of one parent.
One leghorn, one black Maran cross, and one lavender Ameraucana that purchased from a breeder who had extra random pullets, although I discovered two days ago that my youngest, the Ameraucana is a roo. Not sure what I'm going to do with him yet.)
I just rescued two 16 week old lavender Orphingtons. A friend had tried to introduce them to her flock of RIR's and it did not go well. These poor birds are so traumatized by the bullying of the RIR's that I'm not sure how they are going to do. My birds are all pretty chill and aren't aggressive at all, but the two new ones are terrified and cower in the corner.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are so much fun to watch! Mine all free-range in the yard in the afternoon. I love how they come running when I have treats -- they absolutely LOVE kale!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love gardening and quilting.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am a consulting Arborist (ISA Certified) who has been married for 31 years. I've got 4 grown kids and 4 grand daughters. The oldest grand daughter is only 3 1/2 and adores the chickens. She is super gentle with animals and my four older hens who know her best all let her catch them.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I discovered this forum last year and have looked things up when I have questions. I joined because I'm so concerned about my two new rescues that were traumatized by RIR's and having a difficult time integrating into my gentle flock.
