Horse photography is harder than it looks! (a lot like riding, actually...) it takes a lot of practice. I've been shooting horses for 20+ years, and am just finally starting to get good results on a regular basis, instead of one decent shot every once in a while. pintos are especially difficult because the contrast between the light and dark spots is hard to shoot without losing the detail in either. I'm still working on it. I should have gotten a solid-colored horse - much easier to capture!
