HI chicken lovers. I've been referencing this site for a few years now and for some reason, never created an account. But I did today so I'm introducing myself and my chickens.
My name is Becky and I live in Paso Robles, California. I have three Auracana hens and a newly acquired, 9-month-old Austrolorp/Bantam mix rooster. My hens are 3 years old and I've had them since they were 6 weeks old. All four of them have come to via a unique adoption experience.
I acquired my hens from my housekeeper. One day she was distraught and asked me if I could find a home for three chickens. Her mother (from Mexico) had given to her daughter the chickens as Christmas gift. Unfortunately, they didn't have a place to raise them as they started to get bigger. We had been wanting to raise some chickens so I decided to take them. We weren't quite ready for them and it was January, so a friend who had chickens and a small unused coop, babysit them for about a month until we could get their new house in order. A few weeks ago, a neighbor posted an ad on our Nextdoor app looking for a new home for her rooster. She said he was kind and friendly (desirable traits for a rooster) so I reached out to her. She brought him over for a meet and greet, and things seem to be going well. I'm hoping that one of the hens will nest and raise some chicks. But we'll just have to wait and see.
I love my girls. They are fun and have a great personality. Their names are Chicken Mole (accent over e), Chicken Piccatta and Chicken Kiev. Our newly acquired rooster's name is Coque au Vin (we call him Vinnie). He's has some unusual markings and beautiful feathers. They all have unique feet: the girls have their greenish/blue Auracana feet and Vinnie has feather slippers on his from his Bantam side. As I'm sure all of you know, the hens lay beautiful blue eggs.
We wanted to raise chickens because I'd raised them as a kid and enjoyed it. My parents frequently had chickens over the years and in junior high, I took them on. My husband and I wanted to raise chickens primarily for the eggs; however, we have a relatively large vegetable garden and live in the country so they are a perfect addition to our little farm. They LOVE kale and are smart as chickens go. They're like little velociraptors - constantly casing the fence around my garden looking for weaknesses so they can break in. Unfortunately, they are too destructive so I can't let them in too often; however, they have free range of another large area so they're happy chickens.
We also have two dogs: Brix (Queensland Heeler) and Maxx (Queensland/Border Collie mix) and two cats: Latrine and Chew Man Foo. All of the animals get along and our dogs and cats hang out and sometimes even eat with the chickens.
My story has gotten long -- (I'm a former journalist - can you tell?) -- so I'll close for now. Nice meeting all of you and I look forward to getting advice and sharing stories.
Have a great day!
