Awesome, what county? Also do you use a heater in your coop during the winters?

Greetings everyone,

My name is Chris I'm 41 and new to the community but not new to backyard farm life. About half my life has been spent either farming or fishing. I grew up on my grandparent's farm here in RI and also down at the fishing docks, but enough of that. My wife and I started our own little backyard farm a just before "the pandemic that shall not be named" with just a few raised beds for veggies to help with food costs since we have 5 kids and a grandchild living with us. that has grown into 100 square foot garden, 4 chickens, and 4 muscovy ducks with more things being added down the line.

Now down to the details that everyone wants to read.

Yes, I am new to raising chickens as well as to ducks. this is our chickens second winter and our ducks first winter. right now, we have 4 RI Red chickens we did have 6 but sadly one was taken by a bird of prey. the other turned out to be a roo that we had to rehome due to city ordnance. as for the ducks we have 4 muscovy ducks, 1 drake and 3 hens that are about 4 months old. Since getting the chickens they have turned out to be the best pest control we have had and makers of wonderful fertilizer.

I am originally from RI and my wife is from a little map dot in Oregon we met working at a homeless shelter together and we have 5 kids one who is engaged and all of them live with us as well as our granddaughter. we also have 4 rescues, 2 dogs Carley a 10yo female Lab/Rottie mix and Champ a 6yo male red nose fawn American Pitbull terrier. and our oldest daughters 2 cats, Lilith and lucifer. we are hoping in the next few years to buy a bigger piece of property and expand our little farm and add more chickens and maybe some cows and pigs.
My wife found this community around the time we started talking and getting chickens a few years ago and it's been a great source of information for us over the last couple of years. Now i figured it was time to join in and start sharing what i can and ask questions directly instead of spending hours digging around on the internet.

in case anyone is wondering we decided to call our backyard farm "Alphabet Farm" because between everyone's full names we have every letter of the alphabet, except Q
Welcome! I love your farm name and how it came about!
I am in RI too.
