This geek-nerd was forced out of Silicon Valley by the absurd rent prices. My son bought a house for me since the mortgage on this 3 bedroom (800 sq ft) with a 7500 sq. ft. lot is less than half the rent was on my one bedroom with no mod cons in Sunnyvale. I moved in Dec. 2017. The inevitable result of this is that son decided I needed chickens. I now have three 3-week old Silver Spangled Wyandotte hens. I've lived with semi-feral bantams on a friend's farm, but this is my first foray onto chickens of my own Son bought and assembled a Precision Pet Extreme Cape Cod coop, which I think would be way too small but they will have a 20' x 30' run by day.
I have a cat, am retired from a whole lot of things, and garden obsessively. Right now I have 10 straw bales, tomatoes and squash (in other places) and am working on trees to plant in the fall. I've gotten a lot of good advice from the forums here but of course still have loads of questions.
And for anyone with similar interests, one of the hens (the biggest one) is named Tahm Hench. The other two are still anonymous.
