Hi y’all! Greetings from Smithville. We’ve got chickens too. Glad to find this group!

I have an assortment of egg laying chickens. Except for one time, they don’t roost. I was thinking about getting a chicken that will roost, and make chicks that survive. The one time one of our hens started roosting, she hatched 4 live chicks that lived about 3 weeks and then all of them died, pretty much around the same time. I figured they were genetically defective somehow, coming from an egg laying chicken. Am I correct on this assumption? Should I get a different chicken if I want chicks that survive?

Hello, how high are your roosts and how old are your birds? Most chickens will use a roost if they can...maybe this article will help out: coop-stack-up-how-high-stuff-works-well.73427

As for why the 3-week old chicks all died around the same time, more details may be helpful.

Thanks for joining!
