We've been thinking about getting chickens for a while now. We have a wonderful backyard garden and edible landscaping throughout our front yard. We have 2 daughters, 2 very large dogs, and the perfect spot in the backyard for 2 happy hens. Our main concern are the predators so I'd appreciate any helpful tips! We are next to the Angeles Forest and our street is frequented by coyotes, raccoons, snakes, and lately, bears! Our summer project is going to pick, design, and build a coop for 2-3 hens. Wish us luck!

I would check out the Coops sections for some ideas, wow that's a lot of predators! Make sure to use hardware cloth (strong mesh wire) instead of chicken wire.

I think nothing much works for bears - electric fencing may repulse them but, some people say their fur insulates them so well they don't feel it.

It seems the bear isn't around any more. I think they may have found better trash in a neighborhood with more junk food. We tend to not have too much actual "trash" since we recycle and compost!

We've got some great ideas. My husband, the engineer, is on board so I'm sure we'll be able to have a small dance party in the new digs! So far the adults are more excited than the kids...figures! I'm going to make my girls document our progress. So far we are still in the development stage.
