Thank you all so much for the warm welcomes and for the info about where to post birds looking for a home!
Greatly appreciated!
Saffron was rescued from a hardware store that had chicks for sale up in the Glendale CA area. The lady
who rescued her (well, maybe a her .. don't have a clue about sexing chickens as small as Saffron) saw
her constantly falling down, ending up on her back, and not able to stand or walk.
The rescuer and her Mom tried caring for Saffron for a couple of days, but when there was no improvement
in her condition, they brought her to me all the way from Glendale. The Mom had been here before with
other rescued birds over the years so thought that I might be able to help. Truly, I had no clue when Saffron
arrived as to what might be wrong .. just got lucky, I think!
I started Saffron on some avian vitamins and syringe fed her for about a week even though she was
eating on her on (if she could stay on her feet long enough). Finally she was able to stand and walk a
bit even though quite wobbly. After another week, she was definitely on her feet and doing well.
Her toes aren't fused, and I don't think there is any remaining problem with her. She was still having some
problems controlling her legs when I took the picture posted here. She is a delightful little creature and
quite opinionated and head strong!
I certainly don't know my chicken breeds but having seen Barred Rock posted in this thread, I must say
that she is certainly beginning to look like one. I'll get some new pics in the next few days.
Thanks again everyone!
Terry
