After many years of going back and forth about owning chickens my husband and I have finally decided to go for it. My father-in-law breeds Bragg Mountain Bluffs in OK, so we plan on getting our chicks from him - perhaps even from the family named for my husband (he named the different families after his children). The house we live in now has an approximately 20' x 8' dog run with a small covered area for shade. I plan on using this area for the chickens (we are only planning on 3 or 4 hens), and want to put a coop in the shaded area. My biggest concern in El Paso is the heat, we've had 100 + days for over a month now, and I'm not sure how that will affect chickens. Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning more about chickens - I've always wanted some and am now finally in a position that allows me to have them! Glad to be a part of Backyard Chickens and look forward to a long and productive relationship with y'all
! Glad you joined us! Not quite so hot here in Kansas but we've had plenty of 100+ days this summer as well. I think chickens can become used to the heat with plenty of fresh water, ventilation, and shade. I've not lost a bird this year. I think chicks will be the most vulnerable to the heat - doesn't seem like their little bodies regulate as well as the adult birds can. I raise mine from hatch in the basement in a 100 gallon stock tank and put them out in a chicklen tractor with a tarp covering it during the day. I thnk this help acclimate them to the heat when they are ready to be outside full time. Best of luck to you and your birds!!
