I have dreams of a big farm where we can be as self-sufficient as possible and I am 3 backyard chickens closer to that dream! Thanks so much for having this website! I have learned almost everything I know about chickens from you guys!
My 3 chickens are about 15 weeks old right now (sept 18, 2010) and as far as I can tell I have 1- Rhode Island Red "Rhodie" and 2- Dominickers (?) "Pilgrim" and "Dominic"
I dont know how to tell if they are roosters really, but I am assuming that my Rhodie is a rooster, he has a pretty defined crown & wattles & is getting really pretty blue feathers in his tail. The other two: Pilgrim has a much bigger crown and wattles than Dominic and seems to want to run Rhodie away from any good corn cobs or tomatoes I treat them with. Ill be sure to post some photos as soon as I can figure out how
I got these guys for the fun and yummy fresh eggs. We are looking forward to rasing a chick or two if we can. I do wonder about inbreeding though with only having 3? My hubby said I could get another hen if we ended up having 2 roosters and only 1 hen.
We built them a 3 sided coop with hay and a roosting shelf and pretty much give them free reign in our fenced backyard. We have 2 small plastic mason jar waterers and I throw them chicken scratch mixed feed every morning and give them treats about 3 times a week like cherry tomatos, grapes, muscadines, and their favorite so far corn cobs. I try to talk to them as much as I can and my neighbor said to hold them when I get a free minute to keep them friendly. My neighbor has about 6 chickens 4 roosters/2 hens that are not caged at all and often wander into our yard, but I have noticed one of the roosters hanging out by the fence with my chickens and dont know if thats okay or dangerous?
Please feel free to correct anything I am doing that is wrong and make suggestions for things that I could do better. I want happy healthy chickens that lay eggs!
