Hi there from South Dakota!
I am new to this site but have been reading it for a while. Last year my flock of chickens I had raised from eggs and my two ducks were destroyed from one angry mink. I have finally overcome the trauma and chose to start again but this time start with adult birds. My one hen hatched a bunch of chicks so I had no choice but to get attached all over again. This is my first year having my hens produce eggs.
Anyways the reason I joined today is because one of my ducks (an Indian running duck) has a swollen leg and the foot is now dark colored. I found a string wrapped around the "healthy" leg today so I'm wondering if that's what caused the problem with the other leg. I am worried this might be dry gangrene. Wondering if there is something I can do for the duck. Have called around to the local veterinarians but I can't really afford to spend a lot of money on this duck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks! I look forward to seeing how this site works!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've always wanted to visit South Dakota. I've visited about 30 of the 50 states, but that is one that has eluded me and which looks so interesting. I'm sorry about the loss of your two ducks to a mink. I'm a chicken person and don't know much about ducks (although I've had a few), but I have to admit that ducklings are the ultimate in cute. You should post on our duck section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks and take advantage of our duck experts there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

So sorry about your duck. Definitely post this in our ducks section for more help Michael has left you with the link. You might also post this in our emergency section too...https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

I hope you can get her back up on her feet soon.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your duck, X3 on try the Emergency and Duck forum, hope it recovers.

The mink wasn't angry , it certainly enjoyed it's killing spree. Check out the predator section to find out how you can prevent this from happening again. They can squeeze through tiny openings. It will be back. I hope someone on the emergencies or ducks thread can help you decide which is best for the duck and you.
