Greetings. I'm a new member, but I've lurked here and there for some time now. We are finally going to pull the trigger and get some hens, so I figured I might as well join up.

We live within a small city 30 miles north of Green Bay, WI. My mom raised chickens while she was raising me, but it's been so long I have forgot nearly everything I knew back then. And besides that, we'll be raising them in a city backyard instead of acres of free roaming country land like my mom has.

I'm handy with tools and woodworking, so I'll be re-purposing a section of our garden shed for the birds. The coop with be roughly 8'x3', with a run of about 12' wide by whatever long. I haven't decided length yet, but there is plenty of room. It'll come down to what our budget allows for predator proof fencing. Our property backs up to county woodland, so there are lots of predators, big and small. We plan to get no more than 6 birds.

Anyway, hello once again, and I'm looking forward to discussions.

Looks like your coop will be just the right size for 6 birds. If you think there is any possibility that you would want to add more in the future, you should build larger. There is no vaccine for chicken addiction - so 6 often leads to a dozen and so on.
