(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am very new to the chicken world. We have always raised beef cattle, so chickens are completely new to us. I became very interested in them because they are a natural exterminator for our very robust bug population. So far, we are loving our chickens. They have completely won us over!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 38 chickens. We started out with 40. One was eaten by a hawk, and the other was run over by a vehicle.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have 38 Buff Orpingtons...and they are beautiful!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They have been so easy to raise! Now that they are two months old, we absolutely love watching them walk around the yard. They keep us entertained with their social interaction, and their different personalities. We've already placed an order for another batch. We can't wait!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a full-time photographer, so I enjoy taking pictures of people. I also enjoy kayaking at the beach.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Most of my family lives close to me. My two sons work on the family farm with my husband. We have 8 grandbabies - 5 of them live within walking distance. If you're ever in the Pensacola/Perdido Key/Orange Beach/Gulf Shores area and would like pictures taken, feel free to contact me! The beach is my happy place, but the chickens are winning me over. They are just incredibly entertaining! I have one cat and we are also raising 17 keets for the first time. They seem to be feral. We'll see how that goes...they are also entertaining to watch!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found the community perusing through Google. I joined right away, just in case I had some questions about the chickies.
